Miami Dade College North- Aquatic Facility/South Florida Homeland Security Training Center
Recreational Design and Construction was contracted to build the expansion of the Miami Dade College North Campus aquatic center that features a brand new 25-yard x 30-meter Myrtha competition pool with nine deep-water lanes, a large two-section shallow-water instructional area and the ability to accommodate water polo with the removal of lane lines and the placement of the two Spectrum stainless steel goals. RDC also installed a state-of-the-art Colorado Time System, which gives Miami Dade College the ability to host both swimming and water polo competitions.
The facility also boasts a brand-new 40-foot x 60-foot, 12-foot-deep Myrtha dive training well complete with an underground observation room with windows looking into the pool. There are also 6-foot and 10-foot custom-made dive platforms to simulate water entry from a dock, boat, bridge and helicopter. Another awesome future installed is a one-of-a-kind prop car that can be lowered into the training well for instructional simulations.
The crystal-clear 308,000 gallons of water in the competition pool and the 230,000 gallons in the dive training well are both maintained via a state-of-the-art pump room featuring the latest filtration and chemical system managed by a networked BECS controller. The pump room also contains redundant pumps for both pools for reliability as well as eight Symbiont geothermal heaters to maintain ideal water temperature year-round.
The spacious brushed concrete deck surrounding both pools holds two shade-canopy-covered bleachers, two deck showers and two aquatic lifts to assist swimmers with disabilities to easily enter and exit the pool. There are four remote-controlled lighting towers that provide illumination for nighttime activities and events. The deck also provides access to the separate 1,400-square-foot men’s and women’s locker rooms, each containing over 70 lockers, 17 shower stalls as well as multiple toilet stalls and sinks. The locker rooms and the rest of the facility are ADA compliant.
