Pompano Beach residents and concert fans can now enjoy the all-new tensile membrane. Known to locals as “The AMP,” North Broward’s 10,000-seat amphitheater.
The project required a highly elaborate tubular steel structure that would span the existing elevated concrete seating structure without needing internal support structures. The clear span is 100 ft. The fabric area covers 40,000 sq. ft. and is capable of withstanding wind speeds of 170 mph (LRFD) and 135 mph (ASD). The massive box beam spans the existing stage structure with no need to touch the existing structure. The Amp’s box office is located inside the Pompano Beach Cultural Center at 50 West Atlantic Blvd., next to City Hall.
The City of Pompano Beach under the bond program advertised for Design/Build services to create a tensile membrane structure to cover the existing Pompano Beach amphitheater. Having completed several tensile structures over the past 10 years and having extensive technical knowledge of complex structures, RDC put together a team that could meet RDC’s high standards and the city’s expectations. RDC had previously partnered with Birdair (the 800-lb. gorilla in the biz and the leading firm in fabric tennis structures). It turned out Birdair was only considering projects of 100,000 sq. ft. or larger. So, they sent us to Big Span ¬–– the only company they would recommend. We responded to the RFP and were awarded the project.
